It’s the battle of the music distribution services (TWO of the best ones)…
Today, we’ll be looking at LANDR and DistroKid’s music distribution services to determine which one is the best fit for YOUR music.
I personally use DistroKid (and have been for almost 2 years now), however, LANDR was definitely going to be my 2nd option.
The truth is, BOTH of these music distributors are very affordable (relatively speaking).
So, what’s going to make the difference?
If you’re SUPER serious about music distribution and earning some income while doing it, I think LANDR music distribution will be your best bet.
If you’re NOT so serious about music distribution (like me), you’ll most likely prefer DistroKid.
To find out WHY, you’ll just have to keep reading…

LANDR Music Distribution is better than Distrokid because…
Alright, so we’ll start off by giving the spotlight to LANDR Music Distribution.
If you’re looking for an all-inclusive music distribution package that has EVERYTHING you could ever need, then you’ll definitely want to check out LANDR Music Distribution.
The only thing I’ll say before diving in is that I ONLY recommend the “Unlimited Plan”.
If you choose any other plan, you’ll be missing out on some essentials.
LANDR includes better features (no upsells)
One of the best features LANDR Music Distribution offers is to keep your music online even if you cancel your subscription. In other words, you could pay once to get all your music uploaded and that’s it!
You’ll also keep earning royalties.
The same feature on DistroKid (called “Leave a Legacy”) would cost you an additional $29.00/single or $49.00/album (one-time) per release, so it’s definitely not worth it in my opinion.
You’ll also have YouTube Content ID included with your LANDR Music Distribution subscription. The same feature on DistroKid would cost you an additional 4.95$/year + 20% of your earnings (per release).
I personally don’t use YouTube Content ID either way, but YOU might need it.
Those are the TWO features that make LANDR Music Distribution stand out.
LANDR makes payouts MUCH easier
One of the biggest downsides to DistroKid (for non-US residents) is the fact that it still withholds some of your earnings for US taxes (approximately 30%). The only way to get around this is to register for an international tax identification number (ITIN).
Believe me, that’s WAY more difficult than it sounds…
LANDR is actually based in my hometown of Montreal, Canada.
That’s why you WON’T have any withholdings on your earnings regardless of where you live in the world. The only thing you need to have is a PayPal account (no other options).
When it comes to music distribution, EVERY penny counts.
Getting taxes TWICE on your earnings is unacceptable if you want to make money. Right?

DistroKid is better than LANDR Music Distribution because…
It might seem like LANDR Music Distribution is superior to DistroKid in every way, but why do I personally use DistroKid? There MUST be a few reasons…
I’ll admit that DistroKid has its flaws, but it gets the job done!
If you just want to get some music out and don’t really care about the few pennies you’ll be earning (sad, but true), you’ll definitely prefer saving some cash with DistroKid “Musician Plan”.
DistroKid is lightweight and affordable
That’s because DistroKid omits the non-essential features.
The entry-level plan (“Musician”) excludes some of the features that were present in the “Unlimited Plan” with LANDR like…
- Leave a Legacy (keep earning royalties when you cancel)
- YouTube Content ID (monetize your music on YouTube)
- Schedule your releases
- Advanced analytics
For someone like me who doesn’t use ANY of that stuff, it’s perfect!
I’d rather pay less per year than pay more for things I don’t need.
However, DistroKid also offers the same features as LANDR if you prefer to purchase them as add-ons or through higher tiers (“Musicians Plus” and “Label”).
The good news is that even DistroKid’s most expensive plan (“Label”) is more affordable than LANDR’s “Unlimited” Music Distribution plan.
DistroKid is always adding new features to the platform
Granted, most of these features are completely USELESS…
I’m mostly talking about the AI Bot that tells you about your song, but there ARE some useful features like the “Wheel of Playlists” which gets your music placed in DistroKid’s Spotify playlist.
DistroKid can also help you with promotion by generating content for your social media profiles. Some are free (like Mini Videos and Promo Cards), but some (like Vizzy Videos) will cost you.
In general though, DistroKid is better equipped for promotion.
The ability to get heard by leveraging playlists is probably the most useful out of all the features and DistroKid recently added a new feature called Upstream.
It connects record labels and artists.
DistroKid even has its own music social network called slaps.com (it’s kind of lame though).
DistroKid makes songwriting splits EASY
You might be surprised that LANDR doesn’t provide a tool for splits.
DistroKid, on the other hand, has one of the best tools for songwriting splits on the market. If you frequently collaborate with other artists, it’ll save you LOTS of headaches.

What do LANDR and DistroKid have in common?
Probably the most important feature that LANDR and DistroKid have in common is distribution speed. They’re both the FASTEST music distribution services on the market.
LANDR claims to start getting your music into stores as soon as 1-2 business days.
With DistroKid, it’s roughly the same. However, it depends on how many artists are distributing at the same time. I assume it’s the same for LANDR.
Other than that, everything else is pretty much standard…
- 0% commission fees (only on the “Unlimited Plan” for LANDR)
- Unlimited releases (only on the “Unlimited Plan” for LANDR)
- Distribution to all major platforms and more
- Monetization for social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, etc…)
- Ability to add lyrics
You’ll realize that most music distribution services provide the exact same things.
You simply need to look out for the SMALL details like we talked about today.
Summary: LANDR vs DistroKid Music Distribution
So, which one is it going to be… LANDR or DistroKid?
It really depends on the type of artist that you are. Personally, I find that DistroKid has everything I need and I’ve never had any issues with them.
I’m just not too fond of the tax withholdings (that’s my biggest complaint).
If you collaborate with other artists frequently though, you might find that DistroKid pays for itself in the time and energy you’ll be saving in regards to administering royalty splits.
However, LANDR Music Distribution provides features that some artists may consider essential. That’s why I only recommend the “Unlimited Plan” if you’re going with them.
The payouts are much better and remember… NO TAX WITHHOLDINGS.
